Living, Loving and Creating on Lavender Hill

Look who's come out to play!

My mother was married in 1951.
One of the first things she bought as a married woman:
Her own Singer Sewing Machine.

That machine, in its oak cabinet has always been in my life.

Growing up my mother and godmother made ALL my clothes.
They also made all the home decor items such as
bedspreads, curtains and pillows.

I was a very well dressed little girl and couldn't wait
to learn how to sew myself!
Like most little ones, I started with doll clothes and moved on from there.

In high school I took FOUR years of Home Ec and loved every class!

Although I made some of my clothes,
my interest has always been in home decor and crafting.
Maybe it would have been different
if I'd had a daughter to sew cute little dresses for!

When I got married,
Mommy gave me her machine and
it's been in my craftroom and well used here on Lavender Hill!

Since my Monster got sick, however,
so many things have beenon the "back burner" around here.
Today, I dusted off my old friend.
I straightened up the drawers and
enjoyed the smell of the oak and the metal machine!

I have plans for a new cushion for the backyard swing,
a canopy for over the hottub made from drop clothes -
*thank you Pinterest*
And maybe, I'll even make myself a little sundress,
for old time's sake!

Pools open!!!!

Well, OK, the cover is off -
it's not exactly ready for taking a dip:

On my list this week is to
vacuum and shock the heck out of that thing!

Also pool side news -
I made a
POOL RULES
sign out of an old shelf,
left over spray paint and a raid of my stickers!

I love it when I get to use up stuff
around Lavender Hill and make
something for ZERO dollars!

Leftovers?

In this house, I am sorely outnumbered...
it's just me and Trixie and
all those guys!

As any mom who has raised a houseful of boys can attest -
there are RARELY any left overs here.
Unless of course we're talking about crafts...
in my little lavender sanctuary I always have plenty of
bits and pieces left over waiting for something
FUN !

After I finished all the porch pillows and stinker
I found myself with a couple of small
leftover yarn balls...

So what's girl to do?
Make a yarn bombed wreath
of course!!

A big fat
"R"
monogram tied on with cotton cord
was the perfect addition!

I think it ties all the colors on the porch together -
And it just makes me SMILE
when I see it!

Happy Porch Colors!

I have two more porch pillows to back and stuff...
but,
I couldn't wait to put out the ones that are finished!

I'm loving the gingham and floral together!
And, to think they were old clothes headed
for the rag basket!

I found this adorable flag that pulls all the colors together:

I hope everyone is enjoying this delightful
May weekend!

Bippitty, Boppitty, Bobble!

I am  always on the look out for fun new crochet stitches and edgings.
And
Nothing feeds that quest as well as
PINTEREST ...

That's how I found:
an adorable crochet blog:

Heidi's is chock full of awesome crafts and ideas!

Just yesterday I came across this
And fell in love!

It reminds me of happy little pom poms!

The stitch is incredibly simple -
just a series of double crochets
that are linked together to form the Bobble.

I couldn't think of a better Stinker
to experiment on then the
BRIGHT Porch STINKER:

The possibilities are endless
and my brain is racing with all the
FUN
ways I can play with the
Bippitty, Boppitty, BOBBLE!

Hooky progress:

Remember this stinker I'm making for MYSELF?

I've gotten five rows done:

Since it's for my queen size bed
I'm thinking
I'm about a quarter of the way done!

Spring on Lavender Hill

It's been wacky weather in Northern NJ this Spring.
It's gone from the high 70s to nearly freezing and
then back again to the 60s in a matter of days.
 I can't complain though,
I'm not a fan of the heat and
from what I've heard from other bloggers
it's still WINTER in parts of the country!
At least we've had some sun - I NEED sun!

I did get some pansies in last week:

The grape hyacinths have bloomed too:

I hung a new hooky banner over the swing on the porch:

The new pillows and stinker will go out this weekend -
if the weather cooperates!
